Ulf Högström awarded Jubilee Doctor title

Ulf Högström is awarded the title Jubilee Doctor at the Conferment Ceremony on Friday, May 29.

Ulf started his career at SMHI (the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) after his first degree at Stockholm University in 1957. There he worked on a project concerning the spread of radioactive air pollutants, which became the basis for a doctoral thesis at Uppsala University 1964. That in turn paved the way for research on the spread of air pollution at SMHI. After his defense in September of the same year, Ulf started as an Associate Professor (docent) at the Department of Metrology at Uppsala University.

His first research project at Uppsala University was an experimental study in Märsta of the atmospheric superstratum. This project was followed by a series of field experiments in different parts of the country concerning wind energy research and the installation of a permanent field station on Gotland at Näsudden. During the 80’s Ulf developed, together with engineers at the Department, a very sensitive instrument for measuring turbulence in the field, the so called MIUU instrument. The research conducted by Ulf and his group led to a very fundamental understanding of the turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer.
